Second day

The second day of our practice.

To begin with Assalomu Aleykum everyone. Today is the second day of our practice. The weather is cold and rainy and for this reason we started our day with hot coffe.

Today our destination is Maggoki Attoriy which is the most famous place in Uzbekistan but also in Central Asia.

None of the ancient monuments of the city hides so many mysteries for archaeologists and historians as this one. Before the Arab conquest, there was a bazaar where they traded idols, medicinal potions and attoron spices; there was also a temple of the Moon (Moh). A mosque was later built on the site of this temple. The first part of the name of the mosque "Magok" means "pit", because even then it was half hidden by rapidly growing cultural layers.

During excavations in the 1940s led by scientist V. Shishkin, it was discovered that the first mosque was erected on this site in the 9th century. The mosque had four pillars and was decorated with carved stock and paintings. A fire in 937 destroyed the mosque. In the 12th century, according to the same plan, a new building was erected, from which a portal with a unique monochrome decor was preserved in the south, but the building collapsed in the 15th century. The revival of the mosque on a site illuminated by centuries dates back to 1546, judging by the inscriptions on the new eastern portal leading to a semi-underground, but already sixteen-pillared hall.

The most amazing thing is that the mosque could simply disappear under layers of dust and sand. For 800 years, it has been covered several meters, and the restorers had to literally dig it out.Magoki-Attori Mosque is a real personification of antiquity. Its portals are a masterpiece of architectural decoration: they are decorated in a variety of ways - alabaster carving, polished brickwork, glazed majolica and carved terracotta
